Certified Farmers' Markets are an important part of local food production.
Until 1977, regulations required farmers to properly pack, size, and label their fresh fruits, nuts, and vegetables in standard containers to be allowed to transport and sell at locations other than the farm site.
In 1978 California Department regulations exempted farmers from packing, sizing, and labeling requirements when selling at Certified Farmers Markets (CFMs).
Certified Farmers' Markets are regulated by the State and certified by the County.
All producers selling at a CFM must obtain a Certified Producer's Certificate (CPC) from the Agricultural Commissioner in the county of production, certifying that the farmer grew the items they are selling. There is no reselling allowed.
The Direct marketing of agricultural products through CFM's benefits the agricultural community and consumers by providing a flexible marketing alternative without disrupting other produce marketing systems.
The high quality and fresh produce brought to CFM's creates a diverse marketplace and provides the consumer with opportunities to meet the farmer and learn how their food supply is produced.
CFM's provide a great opportunity for small farmers to market their products without the added burden of commercial preparation.
